An underground economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with numerous of members share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting customers to other platforms for purchases.

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

But counterfeit treatments are highly risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
